Why Call A Philadelphia Drain Cleaning Service?

You may have heard of all the various do it yourself solutions for cleaning a clogged drain. Of course, we already mentioned using a plunger, and this does work in many cases.

In other cases, folks mention pouring a solution of baking soda and vinegar down your drains. this can be helpful for general drain maintenance, but if you already have a clogged drain, it’s unlikely to solve the problem.

And then, of course, there are chemical drain cleaners, but any reliable Philadelphia plumbing contractor will tell you that chemical drain cleaners are bad news.

Why?

First of all, chemical drain cleaners are terrible for the environment. They are incredibly toxic, which they have to be in order to tear through whatever it is that’s clogging your drain. So what do you think that stuff is going to do to the local ecosystem once it passes through your drain?

Beyond that, though, chemical drain cleaners are very hard on your pipes as well. The same elements that make them strong enough to eat through whatever is clogging your drain also makes them strong enough to eat through your pipes in the first place.

Finally, chemical drain cleaners won’t do anything to permanently solve many of the sources of clogs. for example, if your drain is clogged as a result of tree roots, chemical drain cleaners will only solve the problem temporarily. Eventually the tree will push back through. This is also true for clogs caused by a cracked pipe that has become misaligned, no amount of drain cleaner is going to shift your pipe back into alignment and seal the crack.

No, It’s much better to call a professional Philadelphia plumbing contractor to clean your drains.

Drain Cleaning FAQ

If you have questions about drain cleaning, we’ve got the answers you’re looking for. Take a look below. You can also look at our general FAQ page for more information.

Though it’s important to call the professionals, we understand if you have more of a do it yourself ethos. As a result, here are some of the options you can try the clear your dreams yourself.

You can try using a plunger, which works on any drain, though you may want to use a different plunger for your toilet than for your kitchen sink. Pouring baking soda and vinegar down the drain, and then flushing it out with hot water can help too. Finally, you can use a drain snake, which you can pick up at your local hardware store.

There are also pressurized plungers, which work by forcing air down your pipes rapidly. These can help as well.

However, as we mentioned above, do not use chemical drain cleaners.

The answer to this question depends on what’s causing your clog. In some cases, it may just take a few minutes, whereas if you have a more serious clog, like a tree root growing into your pipes, it’s a much more serious  and involved issue.

If we do a camera drain inspection and find out you have a tree root clogging your drain, it’s important to take action right away. If it’s only partially blocked, we can kill the roots growing inside your pipe. However, this only works if there is some water flow through your drain. Eventually, however, you may need a fall sewer line repair or replacement, since the roots will grow back.

Be mindful of what goes down your drains! Human waste, water, and the ground up bits of food from your kitchen garbage disposal should be the only things that go down your drain. Many products will market themselves as “flushable” like baby wipes and cat litter, but no reputable plumber will ever suggest you flush them, because they frequently cause clogs.
